Centre National de la Danse Paris [France]
Founded in 1998, the Centre National de la Danse has considerable experience and expertise that make it a unique institution serving the dance sector. Its strength lies in its rich resources: the competence of its staff and the diversity of professions represented. At Pantin, on the outskirts of Paris, a comfortable, fully renovated building will include two new stages on its 3rd and 4th levels planned for 2011. It offers eleven dance studios, three of which stage public performances; a Multimedia Library; a projection theater; archival collections; as well as extensive training information, resources, and services for dance professionals and companies. The CND’s base in the Lyon/Rhône-Alpes area is responsible for continuing the center’s missions in this region.
Its responsibilities, as defined by a Statutory Order of 1998, focus on a choreographic landscape that has evolved over the years, within which the CND has grown and “matured.”
Offering an expanded range of services, the CND has positioned itself to serve as a comprehensive resource center for dance professionals and companies, and to provide public facilities in which to hold diverse and innovative events:
The performance component of the CND’s activities has broadened, and developed an even more distinctive identity. Support is provided to projects from their inception, with added access to a highly original cultural mediation service. The CND participates in initiatives developed by industry partners, such as the Chaillot National Theater, National Choreography Centers, and Centers for Choreographic Development.
The CND’s underlying goal is to offer an increasing range of services to dance professionals, with an emphasis on its role as a resource center and on building partnerships in regional France and Europe.
Three key missions are identified:
- Training and Professional Services
- Heritage Protection
- Artistic Creation
These missions are assigned to four departments:
- The Professional Resources Department
- The Training and Education Department
- The Choreographic Culture and Research Department
- The Creation and Distribution Department
The CND also offers a Multimedia Library with collections ranging from rare and original works to documents with general public appeal.
A particular focus is placed on ensuring a more convivial welcome for all visitors in order to better serve the respective needs of spectators and dance professionals.
A vast space specifically designed for dance professionals aims to meet the requirements of visiting professionals from the moment they arrive at the CND. Assistance is provided for orientation around the building, as well as information on specialist resources, individual interviews, access to data files, computer facilities, and so forth.
A lounge area enables members of the public to keep in touch with news and currents events, with access to publications and an atrium area with live viewing facilities to watch activities and events held in the Large Studio.
Planned for completion in 2011, the refurbishment of the building’s 3rd and 4th levels will provide new facilities including a Dance Film Library and expanded archival storage areas to facilitate the preservation of rare collections.
Showcasing the CND’s national and international missions and activities, our website will be fully revised and upgraded to offer an even more user-friendly and efficient tool for all members of the dance community.
As the dance sector evolves, the CND will continue to pursue and strengthen its collaboration with French and international networks and to develop a wide range of partnerships.
Our desire is to gain in efficiency and conviviality in our mission to serve the public and dance professionals.
